Building loyalty, honesty, friendship, and character
HEADMASTER'S WELCOME
Jeppe High School for Boys is Johannesburg’s oldest public school having been established in 1890 in
Fairview, Johannesburg. As noted in the book
Historic Schools of South Africa “perhaps more than any other Johannesburg school, it reflects the history and changing character of the city and has always been a melting pot for children of diverse socioeconomic, language and cultural backgrounds”
Jeppe is recognised as one of South Africa’s Top 20 boys’ schools. The defining characteristics of the men it produces centre on the principles of loyalty, honour and friendship.
While many Jeppe pupils have gone on to become captains of industry, famous politicians and international sportsmen, it is the ability of the school to shape the characters of boys into men which is its greatest success.
Despite challenging economic times, Jeppe has been able to consistently maintain its high academic, sporting and discipline standards which has enabled the school to fulfil its ambition of “turning Black and White into Gold ”.
In recent times, Jeppe has experienced a resurgence in its fortunes and is recognised as a school very much “on the up” as evidenced by the rapidly improving academic and sporting results and discipline and behaviour of the students.
The continued drive towards excellence has been underpinned by a passionate and loyal
Old Boy network which has financed various infrastructure upgrades to the school campus and has provided the finance, skills and experience to assist the dedicated staff within the school.

ACADEMICS ARE AT THE CENTRE OF ALL WE DO AT JEPPE
- The matric results in recent years are the best in the history of the school
- Sporting achievements are important, but academic performance is the schools primary focus
- Apart from the top performers, failure rates are down, averages are up and the number of distinctions earned has increased, across the board
- The resilience of the boys, and the dedication of the educators have contributed to the ongoing improvements
- The Innovation Hub has given our academic stars a physical home
Jeppe High School for Boys’ matric results in recent years have been the best that the school has produced. In 2021, the overall pass rate was 100%, and in 2022, it was 99,5%, with 74% achieving a Bachelor pass. The results are tangible evidence of the school’s stated ambition and strategy to place academic performance at the forefront of all that happens at Jeppe High School for Boys and are a reflection of the positive academic direction that the school has been heading in for a number of years now.
“While we value and espouse a holistic education, where the lessons learned and skills acquired on the sports fields, in the pool, and on the stage are just as important as those learned in the classroom, we have nevertheless prioritised an improvement in academic performance as our primary goal,” said the headmaster, Mr Dale Jackson.
The results were reflective of steady improvement in academic performance across all grades in recent years, Mr Jackson said. “Pass rates and subject averages are up across all the grades, the number of subject failures is down, total distinctions earned are increasing, and the achievements of our top performers are reaching new heights. Full houses of distinctions and averages of 80% and higher are not uncommon across the board. We are proud of these boys, who showed that when it comes to academic achievement, Jeppe boys can compete with the best in the country.”
Deputy headmistress in charge of academics, Ms Collette Rattray, said the results bore testimony to the resilience of the boys and to the efforts of their teachers, who made the teaching and extra enrichment available online. “The school’s academic results have improved steadily over the last 10 years, with averages climbing and the number of distinctions increasing,” she said. “These improvements can be attributed to an increased focus on academic work. Through the junior and senior School-Based Support teams (SBST), the staff assist learners at risk academically, emotionally, or socially. If a teacher is concerned about a learner for any reason, they can refer him to the SBST via the Grade Head or the House Master, for assistance.
In March 2023, the school’s Innovation Hub was officially opened. The former metalwork classroom and library, adjacent to the Memorial Hall, have been renovated and have become a multi-purpose centre incorporating the latest technology, intended to touch all boys at the school by enhancing their learning experience and securing their future academic success.
“It’s fitting that the academically inclined boys at the school have a place that they can regard as their home, just as some of the sporting activities have buildings on campus that are dedicated to their activities,” Mr Jackson concluded.
